Abstract
This research is aimed to describe the way the English teachers of SMA 4 Solok in implementing genre based approach in teaching writing. This research are also to see the problems found by the English teachers in implementing it and to see how they overcome those problems.The findings of this qualitative research show that the teachers have not implemented genre based approach in teaching writing optimally. Lack of comprehension about basic principles of genre based approach has been the main cause. The teachers find difficulties in familiarizing grammar and vocabulary to the students. It is hard for them to find appropriate material which close to their life.
